Mudflat Meditations


IN EVERY OUTTHRUST HEADLAND, IN EVERY CURVING BEACH, IN EVERY GRAIN OF SAND THERE IS THE STORY OF THE EARTH ~ RACHEL CARSON

I’m no soil scientist, but I’m pretty sure that what we call “mudflats” in these parts actually consist mostly of wet sand. If you take a handful of mudflat matter and dry it out in the sun, you’re left with a handful of sand.

But whatever we call them, the flats comprise a vast and invigorating zone when the tide recedes twice each day, sketching new and delightful patterns on the sand each time…
